VietQR and NAPAS 247: limits, bank fees and safe transfers

VietQR makes a bank transfer easier to address, but a scanned code is not a guarantee about the recipient. This independent explanation separates the QR standard, the NAPAS transfer service and your own bank’s settings. Figures below describe the cited service on 23 October 2026; your bank can impose a lower limit or additional verification.

Understand what the QR code represents

NAPAS describes VietQR as a common identity for QR payment and transfer services processed through its network and participating institutions. It is not a new bank account automatically opened when you scan a code. Your bank or participating application authenticates you, presents the recipient and sends the instruction. A static code may identify an account while requiring you to enter the amount; another code may include transaction details. Read the actual confirmation screen rather than assuming the printed label and the resolved recipient are the same.

Separate the network ceiling from your allowance

The NAPAS 247 VietQR page states an amount below VND 500 million per transaction. “Below” is not the same as an inclusive VND 500 million allowance. It is also not a promise that every individual can transfer that amount. A bank’s per-transaction limit, daily allowance, available balance, identification status and security controls can be more restrictive. Keep these fields separate in a comparison. Do not split an unusual payment into repeated transfers to evade a restriction; ask the bank which supported process applies.

Calculate the cost for the actual channel

The cited NAPAS product description does not establish one universal retail fee for every bank. Read the fee shown by the application and the bank’s current tariff before confirming. A bank transfer and a wallet-funded transfer can use a similar QR code while having different charging rules. MoMo publishes a separate schedule for direct QR transfers to domestic banks, illustrating why an application’s fee cannot be inferred from the VietQR logo. Record who sends, which funding source is used and whether the action is a purchase or a transfer.

Verify the recipient before approval

NAPAS’s fast-transfer description includes checking beneficiary information before sending. Compare the displayed name and bank with the invoice or a recipient detail obtained independently. If a seller changes accounts by message, confirm through a previously known channel. A QR sticker at a counter can be replaced, so the location of the sticker does not remove the need to read the screen. For a large legitimate payment, a small independently confirmed test can help detect an addressing error, but it does not prove the seller will deliver goods.

NAPAS fast transfer service

Handle pending and mistaken transfers carefully

A fast service does not mean every interrupted screen represents a failed transfer. If the application closes, check transaction history and the account statement before paying again. Save the transaction identifier, time, amount and beneficiary details. Contact the sending institution about a pending payment or wrong recipient; do not assume the receiving bank can reverse it on your personal request. A completed transfer is not a card chargeback. Recovery may depend on investigation and cooperation, so no automatic refund is promised here.

Keep a record without exposing account secrets

For everyday reconciliation, keep receipts privately and associate them with a purchase or invoice. A public screenshot can reveal names, account numbers and identifiers that help impersonators. Share only what official support needs through its documented channel. Never disclose an OTP to someone claiming they must cancel the transfer. If the transaction involved a consumer purchase that remains disputed after contacting the seller and provider, the consumer-assistance procedure is a separate escalation route. Distinguish a merchant dispute from an unauthorised account transaction when describing the case.

Practical checklist

  • Open your own banking application rather than an unsolicited payment link.
  • Check beneficiary name, institution, amount and purchase reference.
  • Read the fee for this channel, not a generic advertisement.
  • Confirm available daily allowance separately from the network ceiling.
  • Save a private receipt and inspect history after an interrupted screen.
  • Report a wrong recipient or suspected fraud promptly through official support.

Frequently asked questions

Does VietQR itself hold my money?

The QR identity is a way of addressing supported payments and transfers. Your account or wallet provider handles the funds and the transaction conditions.

Can every user send VND 500 million?

No. NAPAS describes transactions below that amount, and your institution may apply lower limits or additional checks. A network ceiling is not a personal entitlement.

Are all VietQR payments free?

No universal fee is established here. Your bank, wallet, transaction type and funding source determine the applicable tariff, which should be shown before confirmation.
